Daycare provider Debra Koenig, 44, is charged with physical abuse of a child and first-degree reckless injury for allegedly pushing a 2-year-old girl into a wooden stool. The toddler suffered a severed intestine and torn pancreas. Koenig also allegedly did not seek medical treatment for the girl after the incident.

Dane County District Attorney Brian Blanchard says the county will not file criminal charges against driver Jesse Newell, who struck and killed 19-year-old Travis Zeier while he was walking near the Dane County Regional Airport last fall. Blanchard says there is no evidence proving the act was criminal.

Leo Cowan, 38, is sentenced to four more years in prison for biting a guard at Oakhill Correctional Facility in Fitchburg. Cowan is HIV-positive, and the guard will now have to undergo annual tests to see if he's been infected.

A 20-year-old man is seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver while walking near Park and Regent streets. Police are looking for a minivan with a tinted rear window.
A 23-year-old woman is sexually assaulted after she leaves the Kollege Klub on North Lake Street. The woman says she was driven in a van to an undisclosed location and assaulted.

A mobile home on the city's north side catches fire after a cat apparently turns on a stove burner while no one was home. Six cats perish in the fire, which causes an estimated $30,000 in damages.

Verona approves plans for a major expansion of Epic Systems. The medical software firm will add five more buildings and a new parking ramp, effectively doubling the size of its campus on Verona's west side. The Verona City Council also approves a new retail development of 1 million square feet near Epic. The project by T. Wall Properties will include two big-box stores, a hotel and apartment buildings, constructed on former farmland.
