Research firm Covance confirms that five monkeys at its Madison laboratories tested positive for tuberculosis in June. The company euthanized all of the monkeys in the room and quarantined others. No Covance employees became ill.
To no one's surprise, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz announces his bid for reelection, saying 'we've gotten our city moving again.' He'll face Republican Ray Allen, a former school board member and publisher of the Madison Times.

Gov. Jim Doyle taps Michael Morgan to head the state Department of Administration, succeeding Steve Bablitch, who'll leave Jan. 1. Morgan, the current revenue secretary, inherits a $1.6 billion shortfall in the state's next budget. Welcome aboard!
Rolf Lindgren, vice chairman of the Wisconsin Libertarian Party, is sentenced to five months in jail for his fourth drunk-driving offense. Lindgren had pleaded not guilty by reason of mental defect, saying he drove drunk after being wrongly accused of stealing $50 from a Madison pub. But a jury convicted Lindgren in November.

Lance Cpl. Jesse Tillery, 19, of Vesper, dies from wounds suffered during combat in Iraq. He's the 63rd Wisconsin soldier to be killed since the war began in March 2003.

John O'Brien, an aide to Republican state Sen. Dan Kapanke, admits he copied state Democrats' campaign plans from a binder belonging to state Rep. Mark Miller and gave them to GOP leaders. He says he thought they showed evidence of illegal campaign activity; the state Elections Board has deemed otherwise. The State Ethics Board is now investigating O'Brien's actions.
Tuesday 12.5
A 25-year-old woman reports being raped by an intruder in her home on Madison's far east side. Police say the man entered through an unlocked door and brutally attacked the woman, causing multiple injuries. The suspect is still at large.
The Madison Common Council votes 13-6 against a resolution to keep three neighborhood officers, saying Chief Noble Wray is the only one who should make staffing decisions. The neighborhood officers from Williamson Street, Truax Field and Todd Drive will be reassigned.
Jeffrey Dempsey, 29, and Amanda Green, 26, both of Madison, are charged with robbing nine banks between July and November. The two are allegedly heavy heroin users.
E. David Cronon, the esteemed former dean of the UW-Madison's College of Letters and Science, dies after a brief illness at age 82. A colleague says Cronon 'changed the way we approach managing a large liberal arts college.'

Isadore Knox Jr. becomes the seventh Madison Common Council member to announce he is not seeking reelection. It soon will be eight: Isthmus has learned that Ald. Santiago Rosas will announce on Friday his decision not to run.
Ken Kopp, the former owner of a grocery on Monroe Street, dies of cancer at age 76.
