Rickert, the founder of Is My Medicine Legal Yet?, tells the gathering, "I'm alive because of cannabis."

Mayor Dave Cieslewicz proposes a $240 million budget for 2010, including a 3.8% hike in taxes and a slight spending increase.
Jordan E. Helgerson, 24, is charged with accidentally shooting himself and his girlfriend, 20-year-old Amanda Ludois, on Sept. 19. Helgerson allegedly came home "pretty wasted" and started playing with his handgun. Ludois heard a loud noise, felt pain and saw blood on the wall - the bullet penetrated Helgerson's hand and grazed Ludois. Doctors told Ludois she was "very lucky." Presumably, they were not referring to her luck in boyfriends.

Marathon County Judge Vincent Howard sentences Dale and Leilani Neumann - convicted of second-degree homicide over the March 2008 death of their daughter - to a month a year in jail for six years, and two years' probation. The couple prayed over the 11-year-old girl instead of seeking medical attention; she died of a treatable form of diabetes. "God probably works through other people," the judge tells them, "some of them doctors."
