Samantha Young, 20, of Mount Horeb, is sentenced to four years in prison for killing UW-Whitewater professor Paula Poorman last summer in a car crash. Young had been drinking cognac and using cocaine at the time.

Dane County Sheriff's Deputy Dale Veto is seriously injured as he's setting up road spikes to stop a vehicle on Highway 151. Police later arrest the driver, a 15-year-old boy.

Beloved former East High principal Milt McPike dies at age 68. McPike was East's principal for 23 years and most recently served on the UW Board of Regents. (See story on page 8.)

Dozens of people rally in support of popular UW pharmacy student Tope Awe, who is being detained and may be deported to Nigeria. Awe came to America at age 3 with her family.

Wisconsin voters narrowly choose Michael Gableman over incumbent Louis Butler for state Supreme Court; with 99% of precincts reporting, the totals are 419,580 to 399,390. Voters also overwhelmingly approve (567,913 to 237,338) eliminating the "Frankenstein Veto," which lets the governor delete words in spending bills and create new sentences.
In local elections, liberals retain a majority on the Dane County Board. With all wards reporting, in Dist. 1, incumbent Scott McDonell beats challenger J.P. Voters in the city of Verona say "yes" (1,499 to 183) while those in the town of Verona say "no" (560 to 345) to a proposed merger, which fails.
Vandals deflate the tires of more than 100 cars, leaving notes wishing owners a "Happy Fossil Fools Day." But the joke's on the vandals - most of the cars were parked in the Willy and Monroe street neighborhoods, where many residents already walk, bus or bike to work.

Antonio Pope, 32, is sentenced to 40 years in prison for abducting and raping two UW-Madison students in 2006.
The body of a young woman is found in a home on West Doty Street. Police are investigating it as a homicide.
