The Madison Police Department is hoping that easy access to digital cameras will help in the investigation of a Tuesday night shooting on State Street. At 1:45 p.m., MPD public information officer Michael Hanson updated the department's press release about the homicide, requesting witnesses to step forward and share any cell phone photos taken of the incident.
This update follows:
The Madison Police Department is seeking anyone who may have information about this homicide; particularly if anyone last night on State Street had taken cellphone photos of the disturbance prior to the shooting. If anyone has further information about this case, they are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 266-6014.
Additionally, investigators have learned that the fight originated on the street. It appears that the suspect and victim may have known each other. The victim and the suspect shooter engaged in a physical confrontation. As police arrived the suspect was taken into custody without incident. There was not a threat to the community, as this was an isolated incident. The victim, a male from MN, recently came to Madison and had no permanent address.
While at least two people have shared their photos of the aftermath of the shooting online (here and here), there have been no other images taken by cell phones or other devices published online at this point.
Additionally, police are waiting to contact the victim's family before releasing his name or that of the alleged shooter. No press conference is currently planned.
