Monday night, Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz meets with the Valley Ridge Homeowners Association, located on Madison's far southwest side. The meeting takes place at the West District Police Station, located on the south edge of Elver Park which is sort of appropriate, considering that many of the area's residents are concerned about crime.
Under current plans, residents of the city's southwest side will be unserved by streetcars and largely unaffected by the changes in density that are beginning to weigh heavily on other Madison neighborhoods. I've probably seen the mayor speak a dozen times in the last four years, but usually to groups likely to be firmly in his corner. But as the mayor enters his campaign for reelection in earnest, it will be interesting to see if he's able to win over parts of the city that didn't vote for him four years ago.
On Wednesday, Cieslewicz receives a group from Obihiro, Japan, that includes city staff and representatives from Obihiro University. Obihiro is one of Madison's sister cities, located in northern Japan. The university, like UW-Madison, is known for its agriculture and veterinary medicine programs.
