Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz puts his head in the lion's mouth twice on Tuesday by speaking at an Economic Development breakfast that morning and addressing regional transportation with the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce that afternoon.
If you haven't been scoring at home, the mayor nominated former school board member Bill Clingan to the city's Economic Development Commission back in September, prompting the resignations of EDC members Mark Bugher and Tom Still. Clingan subsequently withdrew his name from consideration and is was recently named the deputy vice president of UMOS, an advocacy group for migrant workers. Mayor Dave's relationship with the local business community is similar to Tom Brady's relationship with the New York Giants' defensive line.
And if there's one thing the business community loves to berate, it's any policy that advocates for the establishment of commuter rail. And despite making room for any number of other solutions for local transit problems, the proposed Regional Transit Authority has gained notoriety for doing exactly that. Tuesday afternoon's meeting will be a great opportunity for members of the Chamber to learn more about the RTA, but my guess is that trains will be the focus and the word "trolley" will even be invoked a few times.
