Due to killin' animals and the long holiday weekend, the Mayor's weekly schedule is limited to just two days this week. But it's worth noting that he'll address the UW Geography Department's "Introduction to the City" class Tuesday afternoon in Science Hall.
I happened to take that class and while this was way back in the very early '90s, when Paul Soglin was mayor, it was well known as a gut. If you went to class and skimmed the reading, it was hard not to get an 'A'. Even better, the TA was a beautiful woman in her mid-20s who often held Friday afternoon office hours over beers in the Memorial Union's Rathskellar.
"Introduction to the City" was a breeze, in stark contrast to its counterpart in the Political Science department, "Politics of the City." That particular class required, I believe, six papers, all about different aspects of a city each student chose at the beginning of the semester. Making matters worse, my TA was a hirsute career student in his 40s who dismissed my decision to study New Orleans as frivolous. He instead showed favor to a student who had selected Cleveland.
Oddly enough, in neither class did we talk about Madison very much. I do, however, remember a lengthy discussion in the Geography class about how differences in laws between various townships in Dane County allow for a business like Vic Pierce, where one can purchase beer until midnight. This is truly useful information to a newly-minted 21-year old.
