50/50: The ideas in this comedy-drama about a 27-year-old with cancer (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) are full of potential: his darkly comic relationship with his best friend (Seth Rogen); the bond he forges with fellow patients; his relationship with his therapist (Anna Kendrick). But it never feels as though the movie is sure which it's about.

The Whistleblower: Working as a peacekeeper in war-ravaged Bosnia, an American cop (Rachel Weisz) uncovers a horrifying sex-trafficking ring. The premise, based on a true story, is searing, but the film relies too heavily on clichés of lurid television procedurals.
