This weekend marks the final chance of the season for the Badger men's hockey team to ensure themselves a top-five place in the WCHA in advance of the playoffs. Playing the UMD Bulldogs in the wake of the second late-winter blizzard in as many weeks in Duluth and Superior, the Badgers will need at least one win and one tie, not to mention a string of lucky outcomes in three other weekend conference series, to make the cut.
One Badger freshman forward -- Blake Geoffrion -- comes from a long line of NHL greats; his father played with the Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets in the early '80s, his grandfather won six Stanley Cups with Montreal and is a Hockey Hall of Fame member, and his great-grandfather won three Stanley Cups with the Canadiens and is likewise in the sport's hall of fame. Their family's story was told in a CSTV profile that ran during the Jan. 12 game against Minnesota; it was recently released online by its parent network, CBS.
