"I showed up ready to shout 'Amnestía!' but the celebration wasn't about that, or any other specific legislation," writes Lee Rayburn in a brief commentary about a demonstration for immigrant rights in downtown Madison on Tuesday afternoon. "This wasn't about legality, this was about humanity," he continues.
Organized locally by video compilation of scenes from the rally and march follows below, along with several other scenes from May Day events in town.
Additionally, WORT's Norm Stockwell offers a detailed audio report on the demonstration, noting increased tensions over raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Madison's Latino community and the ongoing work of organizers. There is also a photo gallery featuring the beginning of the march, as shot by Brad Vogel.
While May Day in Madison is most visibly marked by demonstrations for workers' rights and the labor movement, it is also a celebrated in the ancient traditions of Beltane and Walpurgisnacht. Picnic Point, on the UW campus, was the Tuesday morning site for these seasonal celebrations. The here, here, and here.
