"It's just a normal day here in Madison, Wisconsin.... Just very normal."
This was the assessment of one State Street pedestrian on Saturday who witnessed a small horde of zombies as they lurched their way from the Capitol to the UW Memorial Union. Wielding a video camera, the onlooker captured the entirety of the mock protest, which captured the attention of shoppers, sidewalk café patrons, and a stream of happy Badgers fans out and about on the warm afternoon.
One participant describes how he was assimilated by the advancing undead. "I went as a street preacher, and waited halfway down State for the zombie hordes to arrive," he writes. "I was mauled and dragged down by zombies, doomed to join their ravening protest." One of the original zombies, meanwhile, was pleased by the lurch, declaring it "a fantastic, fun time, and we will do it all again bigger and better next year."
The witness armed with the camera ultimately created a video montage of the zombie lurch, set to a remix of the soundtrack to the original NES title River City Ransom. This four-minute clip follows.
"Year after year, it's the same old same old: Every time Zombies try to stand up for their rights, they're told not now, this isn't the right time, some of my best friends are zombies, etc.," writes a bystander who witnessed the procession.
