Hard Candy: In this vengeance fairy tale for the Internet age, an online predator (Patrick Wilson) engages in a cat-and-mouse game with a teenage girl (Ellen Page). The film devolves into shrill horror-show theatrics, but it packs a visceral punch, and Page is particularly powerful in her meaty role.
The Proposition: This Australian Western stars Guy Pearce as a killer and thief who's offered a deal: If he finds and kills his older brother, his younger brother will be spared a date with the hangman. What follows is a revisionist look at Australia's murderous past that has a bloody poetry all its own.
