Melancholia: In Lars von Trier's science-fiction drama, Earth is on a collision course with a massive heavenly body, and a woman named Justine (Kirsten Dunst) suffers crushing depression. This is a grim, agonizingly suspenseful film, and a lovely one.

Young Adult: The writer and director of Juno team up for the story of an unhappy narcissist (Charlize Theron) who crazily returns to her hometown to hook up with her now married high school boyfriend (Patrick Wilson). Theron gives a brilliant performance, and the film sees the humor in various situations without making fun of the characters.
