Conviction: A woman (Hilary Swank) puts herself through law school to help exonerate her brother (Sam Rockwell), wrongly convicted of murder. This sobering and true story is well told, though the light-comedy scenes don't mesh well with the horrific elements.

Let Me In: This American remake, which does justice to one of the best vampire movies of all time, Sweden's Let the Right One In, is about a young vampire (Chloë Grace Moretz) and her new best friend (Kodi Smit-McPhee). It's a deeply moving portrait of youthful loneliness and peer brutality.
