The local artist's fourth LP is imbued with his trademark: introspective, faith-based R&B full of honesty and personal reflection. Dancing between gratitude and trepidation, Lamarr is relatable as he deals with themes like love, ambition and happiness.
D.L.O. the Iceman, who collaborated with Lamarr on the MAMA-winning track "Elevation," brings a welcome edge to Jump Start. His rapping provides an especially nice contrast to Lamarr's honey-sweet tenor on "Pray." Solid instrumental work is another highlight of the album, notably the piano solo in "Masquerade" and the sexy beat on the longing "Motion." "Jumpstart" offers a vibrant bass line, plus a bit of a ska and reggae feel.
Lamarr is clearly maturing as an artist, especially in the lyrics department. That's evident on the very pretty closing track, "Alive."
