The title of Kyle Henderson's new album leaves no secrets about its intent. Brand New Chance explores a new chapter in his four-decade music career, offering a historical compendium of the blues, rock and soul influences that have shaped his songs since he left his '80s New Wave band, the Producers, and moved to Madison. It also introduces Henderson's ensemble of local artists: Mike Ripp on guitar, Tom McCarty on bass and Chris Sandoval on drums. Henderson provides bass and lead vocals.
With hints of early Bob Seger and ZZ Top, this is a promising collection powered by Henderson's husky tenor. From pure-bliss numbers "Walkin' Shoes" and "It's Better to Roll How You Roll" to the thoughtful final track, "Takes a World to Make a Man," it's clear Henderson has plenty of soul left to bare, even after years of singing his heart out.
