Tandem Press
The jazz series is an open house of sorts.
Tandem Press, the fine art press affiliated with the UW Art Department, is launching a free jazz series beginning Sept. 26. Concerts will showcase student ensembles from the jazz program in UW's School of Music.
The small press recently moved to 1743 Commercial Ave. on the east side. "We're a little off the beaten path, so we wanted to come up with some after-hours event, and our director wanted a live-music component," curator Amy Newell explains. "We thought we'd team up with the School of Music. A lot of our programming involves interaction with graduate and undergraduate students, so featuring them would dovetail with our mission."
As a sort of open house, the jazz series will welcome visitors to Tandem Press' location with new artwork on display and refreshments to enjoy during the performances. The schedule features the Contemporary Jazz Ensemble on Sept. 26, the Jazz Composers' Septet on Oct. 24, and the Blue Note Ensemble and the Latin Jazz Ensemble on Nov. 21. All shows are from 5 to 7 p.m.
