Mary Hsu is a violinist and violist based in Madison, Wisconsin. She is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance under the guidance of Dr. Dawn Wohn at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, with additional certification in physics. Previous teachers include Dr. So-Hyun Altino, Janet Chisholm, and Kathy Taylor.
An avid chamber musician, Mary has performed in a variety of ensembles, with fellow string musicians, pianists, winds and brass players. Recent highlights include her performance as second violinist in Raphael Nabors’ Pulse for large chamber ensemble, guest lectures on solo violin performance for the University’s Music in Performance course, and premiere of Daria Tennikova’s Concerto for Bass Trombone as principal viola. This past summer, she attended the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival, where she studied with Bayla Keyes, Julia Glenn, and Caroline Coade, and performed in masterclasses for Norman Fischer and Alexandra Kazovsky (Ariel Quartet). She has also worked with Rachel Barton Pine, Károly Schranz and Si-Yan Li (Takács Quartet), Elias Goldstein, David Rose, the Spektral Quartet, Arianna Kim, and Eleanor Bartsch, among others, in masterclasses and summer festivals.
Professionally, Mary has worked with La Musica Lirica to put on productions of Rossini’s La Cenerentola and Verdi’s La Traviata. Mary is a recipient of the UW-Madison’s Tuition Remission Award for music, Kemper Knapp Scholarship, and Golay Fund Award in music. She has appeared as soloist with the MHS Symphony Orchestra as well as a section member in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra as a two-time Honorable Mention in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Stars of Tomorrow competition. In her free time, Mary enjoys playing the piano, pursuing her interests in astrophysics and particle physics, and crocheting.
