Bishop Robert Morlino says he'd like to build a new cathedral on the downtown site, with space for 1,000 people to worship, a pastoral center and maybe underground parking.

Mario Amaya, 26, is charged with second-degree sexual assault for allegedly raping a 23-year-old woman downtown last week. Police say Amaya was one of four men who assaulted the woman. Police are still looking for the other three.

In the early morning hours, the Dane County Board votes 18-14 to prohibit landlords from rejecting tenants solely because they receive Section 8 housing assistance. The board also rejects putting an anti-war referendum on the November ballot.

Fighting erupts inside Club Majestic and eventually spills out onto King Street, where a crowd of about 300 people are milling about. Fifteen Madison police officers respond to the disturbance. Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz suggests the city will take action against the club, including having it declared a public nuisance.

Despite the rain, a record-setting 2,475 athletes compete in the Ironman triathlon.
The city of Madison unveils three redevelopment plans for Allied Drive, following four days of input from neighborhood residents. The plans all offer increased greenspace, new roads and rehabbed housing units. A task force will choose a final plan, which must be approved by the Madison Common Council.

Irwin and Robert Goodman create a foundation that will provide $50,000 a year for low-income families to use the Madison pool, which the Goodmans previously gave $2.8 million to help build.
Voters decide several primary races. In the Republican battle for attorney general, J.B. Van Hollen bests Paul Bucher, 122,262 to 82,172. On the Democratic side, Kathleen Falk beats incumbent Peg Lautenschlager, 166,905 to 151,158. For secretary of state, incumbent Democrat Doug La Follette trounces Scot Ross, 177,607 to 72,740. In the Democratic race for Dane County sheriff, Dave Mahoney beats Robbie Lowery, 27,286 to 16,132. For State Assembly Dist. 81, incumbent Democrat Dave Travis defeats Henry Sanders Jr., 2,663 to 1,880. And for Dane County clerk of courts, Carlo Esqueda wins over Bob Syring, 25,573 to 15,518. Both Travis and Esqueda are unopposed in November.
