A coalition of humane societies sues the Department of Natural Resources to stop the state's first wolf hunt, scheduled to begin Oct. 15. Hunters are allowed to use dogs, and the coalition argues this will be cruel to both the dogs and wolves. Dick Thiel, a retired DNR wolf manager, submitted testimony as part of the lawsuit, saying: "Attacks will be swift and furious. Dogs will be seriously injured and die, and wolves will be injured and die...."

Police serve a search warrant at a Cross Plains restaurant looking for evidence after a woman, who was picking up takeout food, reported having been sexually assaulted there by five employees on Aug. 3. No charges have been filed.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports that the recount for state Sen. Van Wanggaard's June 5 recall election cost Racine taxpayers about $5,400. Wanggaard, in addition, paid $685. The recount did not alter the outcome - he lost to challenger John Lehman.
Dane County Circuit Judge Nicholas McNamara sentences Geoffrey Herling, 52, of Waukesha to 22 years in prison for shooting at two Dane County sheriff's deputies in July 2011 in Middleton. The deputies returned fire, wounding Herling.
Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman becomes the third justice to recuse himself from a discipline case regarding his colleague, Justice David Prosser. Prosser is accused by the Wisconsin Judicial Commission of violating judicial ethics by putting his hands around the throat of fellow Justice Ann Walsh Bradley last year. It's uncertain what will happen to the case now.

Tasha D. Harmon, 30, allegedly stabs her 6-year-old daughter multiple times in Fitchburg. The woman also stabs herself multiple times before telling a neighbor what she did. The girl is in critical condition but expected to survive. Harmon's injuries are not life-threatening.

In the primary election, former Gov. Tommy Thompson prevailed in a hotly contested Republican race for U.S. Senate. He'll face U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Madison) in November.
