The Dane County Board agrees to buy a resource center for the homeless at 1490 Martin Street for $330,000. The decision comes over concerns about renovation costs and the long distance from downtown.
An electrical fire breaks out at the state office building GEF-I, 201 E. Washington Ave. No one is injured, but the building will be closed for about eight weeks.

Madison police officers shoot and kill Ashley DiPiazza, 26, in her east-side apartment after spending 30 minutes talking to her. DiPiazza, armed with a handgun, allegedly "presented a threat to the officers." It's the third time this month that local police -- twice Madison officers and once deputies from the Dane County Sheriff -- have killed someone.
The Wisconsin State Journal -- in collaboration with the Medill Justice Project -- reports that there is doubt that 4-month-old Lincoln Wilber was killed by abuse from his daycare provider, Jennifer Hancock, who was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 13 years in prison. Michael Stier, a forensic pathologist whose testimony was crucial in convicting Hancock, now believes something other than abuse could have caused the boy's death. "I want to make sure that something I did did not lead to an injustice," he says.

A 68-year-old man exits a Madison Metro bus on East Washington Avenue, stumbles back toward it, and is run over by the bus' rear wheels. He later dies at a hospital. Madison Police say the man had been drinking on the bus.
Monona Police arrest Guifen Leanna, owner of Guifen's Place massage parlor, for allegedly keeping a place of prostitution. A 37-year-old woman is also tentatively charged with prostitution.
Wednesday, 5.21
The State Journal reports that police arrested Devan McCambridge, a 19-year-old UW-Madison student, earlier this month for allegedly trying to extort a woman for sex. McCambridge allegedly posed as a lesbian seeking sex on Craigslist, discovered intimate details about a woman, and then threatened to expose her if she didn't perform a sex act on him. He tells police he had done this to "numerous" other women. McCambridge is out on bail and has yet to be formally charged.
