Dane County Circuit Court Judge Ellen Berz sentences Demitrius Matticx, 19, to life in prison for killing Jonathan Wilson on Oct. 20, 2011. Matticx was found guilty in May of first-degree intentional homicide in the gang killing. Matticx will not be eligible for parole for 30 years.
The Madison Common Council gives a slightly modified approval of a Monroe Street apartment and retail development, over the protests of numerous neighbors.
Visions, the strip club on East Washington Avenue, paints over a sign it put up three weeks ago portraying a scantily clad woman holding a dollar bill. The city had ordered the club to remove the sign after nearby residents complained.

The state fires Steven Krieser, assistant deputy secretary at the Department of Transportation, for allegedly calling undocumented immigrants criminals and comparing them to Satan on Facebook. In a statement, Gov. Scott Walker calls the statements "repugnant." Krieser, who made $98,000 a year in the position, later apologizes for the comments.

The Madison Police Department announces that officer Morris Reid has agreed to retire after an investigation found he committed eight violations in a 2011 incident, including mishandling evidence and failing to address a domestic crime. The Dane County district attorney's office has decided not to press charges.
The Wisconsin State Journal reports that Walter Cnare hopes to take his foot-long orange beard to the National Beard and Moustache Championships in New Orleans next month.

The Madison Police and Fire Commission rules that it will hear a complaint filed against police officer Stephen Heimsness for killing Paul Heenan last November during a burglary call. Heimsness had sought to have the complaint -- filed by Nathan and Amelia Royko Mauer, who lived with Heenan -- dismissed, since he has agreed to resign from the police force because of unrelated complaints.
Judge Frank Remington orders Ivan Mateo-Lozenzo to stand trial for the alleged killing of Anthony Perez in April 2010 in a Fordem Avenue parking lot. Three others have already been convicted for their role in the killing.

The Capital Times reports that the renewal rate for season tickets to UW Badgers football games has dropped again, hitting its lowest number in at least six years. Student tickets sold out within hours in June, but as of Tuesday, more than 90 season tickets for public seats remained available.
