Madison schools Superintendent Dan Nerad sends a resignation letter to the school board, writing that he intends to leave the district by Aug. 1 in order to start a superintendent job in Michigan. But he adds that he is prepared to stay longer if the board does not have an interim superintendent in place by then.

Lee Anthony Hogenson, 36, dies in a fire in a landmark building on the city's east side. It's the first fire fatality in Madison since August 2010.
Reserve Judge Moria Krueger sentences Dane Schrader, 24, to three years in prison after he pleads guilty to supplying the heroin that killed his friend, Matthew Hans, in 2010. Schrader tells the court: "I lost one of my best friends. I think about what we could have done, but now it's too late."
Eric Hovde, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, tells an audience in Madison: "I have done more for people that are economically disadvantaged than probably - and I've never talked about it publicly because I keep it very low profile - than all but for a very few people in our society." The remarks come after a June 15 talk in which Hovde complained that journalists write too many sob stories about the poor.

Gov. Walker says he is willing to consider changes to the state's $82 billion pension system. Last week, the Pew Center on the States found Wisconsin's pension system is the only one in the country with enough money to meet its current obligations to retired employees.
A young man is rescued after trying to swim across Lake Mendota. The rescue happens about 600 feet from where Roelse drowned three days earlier.

Police find a man's body in a Fitchburg apartment building hallway. Authorities say they are investigating it as a homicide but do not have a suspect.
