A pair of two-year-olds wander away from the Animal Crackers Child Care Center on the west side and are missing for up to 30 minutes before being found unharmed. State officials are investigating and could fine the center.

Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz names Tom Carto head of the Overture Center. Carto runs a performing arts center in Mansfield, Ohio. He replaces Bob D'Angelo, who resigned last year amid charges of sexual harassment.
Kathleen Falk, Democratic candidate for attorney general, begins airing a TV ad attacking incumbent Peg Lautenschlager for her drunk driving arrest in 2004. The ad airs in Milwaukee, Green Bay and other parts of the state, but not in Madison. Some see the ad as a sign that Falk's campaign is flagging.
A Dane County judge dismisses a temporary restraining order against Madison Ald. Santiago Rosas, after his wife, Elena, says she wants to work things out. Rosas was recently arrested for violating the order by contacting his wife's family. Elena had accused him of threatening her with a gun and forcing her to have sex.

About 200 residents and politicians attend a neighborhood rally on Allied Drive.

A 23-year-old woman is raped in the early morning by two men on the 500 block of University Avenue. Two other men who hear the assault try to join in, but the woman escapes. Police are investigating.

Mayor Cieslewicz introduces his $166.9 million capital budget for 2007. The budget includes $16.4 million to upgrade the city's water system, $6.5 million to expand automated recycling, and $3 million for a two-story parking garage at mid-State Street. The Common Council will vote on the budget in November.
