Madison firefighters spend more than four hours dousing a blaze in the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad roundhouse on Commercial Avenue. The fire causes $500,000 in damage to the building, which housed three businesses: Apex Property Management, Warren Heating and a Web developer, Human Head Studios.

The Arboretum Neighborhood Association and state of Wisconsin file lawsuits against the decision by Dane County's zoning appeals panel to allow a developer to build two new houses in the neighborhood. The state says it has an obligation to protect navigable waters and the development would harm nearby Lake Wingra.
Myrtle Maly, 78, is fined $1,000 for killing two cats. Maly poisoned the cats, which belonged to her neighbor on Spaight Street, because she said they were attacking birds in her backyard.
Jeffrey Nering, 18, is charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide for an incident last month. Nering is accused of running over a 16-year-old victim with an SUV three times, breaking his leg, lacerating his head and causing multiple abrasions.
The Department of Health for Madison and Dane County releases a report showing that the number of minors able to purchase tobacco has increased. According to the report, 20.5% of underage 'inspectors' were able to buy cigarettes at stores and gas stations in Dane County in 2006, compared to 7.2% in 2005. In the city of Madison, the rate stayed at 18.3%, the same as in 2005 but much higher than the 6.1% in 2004.

Consultants doing a feasibility study on streetcars recommend that the city of Madison build its first phase through downtown, around the university and down Park Street to Meriter Hospital. The consultants say this $58 million route is the most affordable, although it would not generate as much new development as routes further down Park Street or along East Washington Avenue.
