Christopher Williams, 51, dies in an apartment fire at 6425 Bridge Rd. on the city's east side. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
The UW Board of Regents announces that UW-Whitewater Chancellor Richard Telfer will serve as interim UW System president after Kevin Reilly retires at the end of the year.

Madison Ald. Lisa Subeck announces she will run for the state Assembly seat currently held by Rep. Brett Hulsey, who has not yet declared whether he'll run for reelection. Subeck's council colleague, Ald. Mark Clear, declared last month that he's also running for the seat.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that a secret "John Doe" investigation began in 2012 and has spread to five counties, including Dane. Anonymous sources say the probe will look at possible campaign violations related to a legislative leader and the 2012 governor's recall election. They also say it's an outgrowth of the now-closed John Doe investigation that resulted in criminal convictions for six former aides and supporters of Gov. Scott Walker when he was the Milwaukee County executive.

Madison officials report that developer Otto Gebhardt and Metcalfe's Market could not reach an agreement on developing the north side of the 800 block of East Washington Avenue. Metcalfe's has withdrawn from the project, leaving Gebhardt to find another grocer. The city requires the company to have a 50,000-square-foot grocery for the project to move forward.
A 21-year-old man is robbed at gunpoint on North Charter Street shortly before 9 a.m. About an hour later, a woman is robbed at gunpoint of her iPhone and backpack on South Mills Street.
American Transmission Co. and Xcel Energy apply to the state to build the Badger Coulee transmission line, the controversial project that has been contemplated since 2010. The 159- to 182-mile line could cost as much as $550 million and would deliver power from La Crosse to a substation in Middleton.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that Margie Whalen, who killed a 7-year-old boy in a car accident in June 2012, would like to have her license returned. Whalen, who has a history of seizures, either had a seizure or blacked out at the wheel when her car went off the road and crashed into a family picnic, killing Aiden Mueller. Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne tells the paper his office has not yet decided whether to charge Whalen.
