The Madison Catholic Diocese settles a lawsuit brought by Phoenix Fundraising Counsel, a firm hired to do a fundraising survey on a new downtown cathedral. Phoenix said the diocese refused to pay $350,000 owed and asked it for confidential information it had gathered on priests critical of Bishop Robert Morlino. Settlement details are not released, but both sides agree to call the allegation about confidential information a "misunderstanding."

Dane County Circuit Court Judge Maryann Sumi finds Madison landlord Li Zhang in contempt for continuing to rent out her Badger Road apartment building, despite an earlier order to shut down. The city of Madison wants the court to force Zhang to sell the building, which has been the site of a homicide and numerous police calls.
Monica Everson, a former receptionist at the Madison Civic Center (and onetime Isthmus employee), files a federal lawsuit against the city of Madison and former Civic Center/Overture head Robert D'Angelo. Everson says city officials failed to stop sexual harassment by D'Angelo, who retired in 2005 and is now serving a one-year prison term for running a private business out of his city office.
McFarland's Village Board suspends the liquor license of Con Safos bar for 90 days, after hearing complaints about the business from neighbors.
Brianna Cauley, 11, of Madison, dies after being removed from life support. Cauley had been at Milwaukee's Children's Hospital since a swimming accident in September.

Donald Wiessinger, 50, of Madison, is charged with his tenth drunken driving offense. A few days earlier, a police officer rescued Wiessinger from his burning van, after he crashed it into a tree.

Barack Obama cancels a planned rally in Madison this week. He is taking a couple days to fly to Hawaii to visit his grandmother, who is seriously ill.
Susan Gorton, 45, of Cottage Grove is sentenced to four years of probation for striking and killing a bicyclist on Femrite Drive in 2007. A blood test showed Gorton had smoked marijuana, but prosecutors couldn't prove if she used the drug before or after the accident.
Dane County District Attorney Brian Blanchard says a sheriff's deputy who shot a Cambridge man last week was acting in self-defense. Deputy Jason Walters wounded Jacob Prochnow, 28, after Prochnow pretended to draw a gun.
Dane County officials announce that for the first time ever, they'll have enough ballots for all eligible voters. The county has ordered 390,000 ballots, about 220,000 more than in 2004. County Clerk Bob Ohlsen estimates county turnout could reach 85%.

Carl Ware, 20, of Madison, is sentenced to 18 years in prison for the torture and sexual assault of another man in Cottage Grove in 2007. Ware and two others allegedly tortured the man because they believed he has stolen money and drugs from them.
Dane County authorities identify a body found in Lake Kegonsa State Park last week as Quinton Armond Morris, 24, of Naperville, Ill.
