The Madison school board approves a new position, temporary chief of staff, to assist interim superintendent Jane Belmore. The position pays $170,000 and will last one year. No candidate is named.
Michael Benike, 28, hangs himself in the Dane County Jail and dies later at the hospital. Benike had been charged on July 13 with robbing six banks in the region
A Dane County jury convicts Stephanie Kanoff, 21, of homicide by neglect. Kanoff was texting while driving and hit and killed Dylan Ellefson, 21, on East Johnson Street in 2010. Ellefson's car had broken down and he was standing behind it, waiting for help.

Madison Fire Department paramedics save a 34-year-old woman passed out at the wheel of a car on East Washington Avenue, giving her a dose of Narcan to counteract the heroin she had taken.

The law firm Michael Best & Friedrich releases documents from last year's redistricting effort, which it helped oversee, that suggest Republicans were seeking to benefit themselves. Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) tells the State Journal: "To me, it's sort of the smoking gun that shows all of their efforts were political, partisan and about protecting their power."

Montee Ball, a running back for the UW Badgers, is attacked by five men on the 500 block of University Avenue and suffers head injuries. Police report that Ball did not know his attackers and that the assault was unprovoked. In a statement, UW football coach Bret Bielema says, "I do expect Montee to make a full recovery."
