Photographer Michael Kienitz, who owns the copyright to Mayor Paul Soglin's official portrait, sues retailer Sconnie Nation for using the mayor's image on T-shirts for this year's Mifflin Street Block Party. The image, taken on April 19, 2011, was printed on shirts that read: "Sorry for Partying."

A family files a lawsuit against UW Hospital because a resident doctor there allegedly informed a patient's wife and son that the patient had AIDS in violation of patient-doctor confidentiality. The illness was the result of the man's same-sex extramarital affairs. The man, who died in October 2010, was "embarrassed, humiliated and deprived of a dignified death," the lawsuit states.
State schools superintendent Tony Evers announces he expects Wisconsin to be given a waiver from the No Child Left Behind program, even though it was not included in waivers announced a week ago. "We look forward to receiving the final approval soon," Evers says.
Because of continuing hot, dry weather, the state Department of Natural Resources institutes a burn ban in 11 counties, including parts of Dane, until the region gets rain. The ban includes smoking outdoors, all fireworks and the disposal of ashes outdoors.

Matthew O'Dell, 25, allegedly stabs Craig O'Donnell, 24, to death at the Oak Park Terrace trailer park community on Madison's north side. The altercation allegedly arose from jealousy over a woman. O'Dell turns himself in at UW Hospital the next day.

State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announces that Wisconsin will receive about $9.6 million from a $3 billion national settlement with pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, which marketed drugs for uses not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The money will fund Wisconsin's Medicaid programs.
Madison police arrest a 20-year-old man who allegedly passes out at the wheel of his car on Kingsley Way after taking heroin.
