Nicholas Schiavo, owner of Café Continental and Club Majestic, is struck in the head with a shotgun stock in a downtown parking lot. Police later charge Jason Hall, 19, with aggravated battery for striking Schiavo and three counts of recklessly endangering safety for allegedly firing the shotgun. Schiavo says he followed Hall because he was afraid Hall would damage his car.
Gov. Jim Doyle vetoes a bill that would relax rules on rent-to-own stores. Doyle says the bill did not go far enough to protect consumers.

UW-Madison students narrowly reject a referendum to rebuild and remodel the student unions. The students would have had to pay an extra $200 a year in fees for the next 30 years to help fund the $169 million renovation.
