Prosecutors in the John Doe investigation into Gov. Scott Walker’s recall campaign file an appeal of the state Supreme Court’s decision to halt the probe with the U.S. Supreme Court. This could be the final phase of the secretive, six-year battle over money, speech and political influence.

Wisconsin’s tourism economy is worth $19.3 billion, according to a study commissioned by the state Department of Tourism. Direct visitor spending last year reached $11.9 billion, an increase of 4.4% from 2014.
Sunday, May 1
A series of events that began with a homicide in West Allis and a drive-by shooting in Sauk County ends with an officer-involved shooting on I-90/94 outside DeForest. The suspect in both crimes is later identified as Zachary T. Hays, 20, of West Allis. The drive-by victim, who was randomly targeted, later dies at UW Hospital.
Monday, May 2
After a year of changes that brought massive budget cuts and weakened tenure protections, UW-Madison faculty are not happy with UW System President Ray Cross or the Board of Regents. The university’s Faculty Senate approves a resolution declaring they have “no confidence” in the administrators’ support for the Wisconsin Idea.
Tuesday, May 3
UW-Madison’s prayers have been answered. Memorial Union Terrace officials announce the Terrace will temporarily reopen May 12-15 for graduation celebrations. The Terrace will then close May 16-19 for more construction, with tentative plans to officially open for the season on May 20.
Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne declines to charge the UW-Madison student, Denzel McDonald, who was arrested last month for a string of anti-racist graffiti incidents on campus. Instead, the student will enter a restorative justice program.
