A Madison committee recommends the city accept a proposal by Gorman & Co. to develop Union Corners, a vacant parcel on East Washington Avenue owned by the city. Gorman's $83 million proposal includes building 185 housing units and 163,000 square feet of commercial space, including a UW Health clinic, grocery, library and restaurant. Livesey Co./Stone House Development suspended its proposal right before the committee made its recommendation.

Wisconsin helps to reelect Obama and sends Tammy Baldwin to the U.S. Senate. Baldwin is the state's first female senator and the first openly gay person to serve in the Senate. Mark Pocan easily takes over Baldwin's congressional seat.
Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney announces at a press conference that charges are being brought against Jeffrey Vogelsberg, 28, for allegedly torturing and murdering his 27-year-old stepbrother, Matthew Graville, in Mazomanie in June. "In 33 years, I find it very difficult to find another case where an individual took advantage and abused a developmentally disabled male for their own entertainment," Mahoney tells reporters. "Matthew lived a living hell, one in which he could only find peace in death."
