Fresh Madison Market has cleared its shelves of all tobacco products. Owner Jeff Maurer announced via Facebook that the campus grocery store would immediately cease selling cigarettes, cigars and other products containing nicotine. The post stated that sales generated from tobacco products can't outweigh the harm caused to customers and their families. “The sale of tobacco products is not in keeping with our mission of nutrition and good health,” Maurer wrote.
Maurer opened Fresh Madison Market, 703 University Ave., in 2010 -- ending a 40-year period on the UW-Madison campus where there was no convenient grocery that sold fresh fruits and vegetables.
Fresh Madison Market joins retail giant CVS Pharmacy in deciding to go 100% tobacco-free. CVS discontinued tobacco sales at all 7,600 of its stores in 2014.
