Word of Mouth: Oct 1

From your friends at Isthmus, Madison's alt-weekly.

Where we're volunteering

Rachel Werner, content marketing specialist at Taliesin Preservation:

I can't wait to not only "talk the talk" but also "walk the catwalk" to raise awareness about human trafficking during the REVIVE fashion show on Oct. 6. Ethical clothing line Fair Indigo is the main organizer of this inaugural fundraiser at the Brink Lounge, which will feature apparel and accessories by designers committed to making sustainable products — without relying on substandard human labor conditions. Attire modeled throughout the event will be auctioned off via Instagram with all proceeds benefitting the Dressember Foundation.

What we're eating

Cat Capellaro, Isthmus arts & culture editor:

I am so in love with the breakfast menu at the Monona Bakery & Eatery. It's chock full of Honduran and Mexican foods, cooked to perfection, including the best chilaquiles (eggs and tortillas scrambled in green salsa and topped with feta) I've had since visiting Chiapas, Mexico, many years ago. It's got generous portions, friendly staff, delicious bakery, and a magical substance called "Honduran cream" that I want to eat on everything.

Where we're shopping

Chelsey Dequaine, Isthmus social media & marketing director:

After five years of living in Madison, my fiance and I finally became members of Willy Street Co-op. We moved a bit closer to the north side location –– which is beautiful and has a cozy fireplace in the dining area –– so we figured it was time. I love how the co-op features local farmers and makers, and members get sweet deals. Watch out for my eggplant sticker!

What we're eyeing

Katie Zamzow, Isthmus event director:

The perfect fall boots! As autumn begins, so does the change of the footwear from slides and sandals to boots, and in Madison there are plenty of options. I've been eyeing some knee-high boots at Morgan's Shoes. But Sierra Trading Post just opened off Whitney Way, so that's worth a stop. They have a nice selection of cozy boots that will keep you warm.

Who we're following on social

Angela Russell, vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion at CUNA Mutual Group:

I'm a huge Instagram fan and an IRL fan of The Shop on Johnson Street. The Shop is a new, funky, cool and hella hip place to get your nails done. From the service to the overall vibe, this places exudes soul, warmth and creativity –– and their Instagram offers the same in creative content.

What we're reading

Oscar Mireles, Madison poet laureate and executive director at Omega School:

The topic of immigration is timely, given the current political climate. What gets lost in all the rhetoric is "Who are these people and why do they all want to come to America?" Two books — From Borsch to Burgers by Ruslana A. Westerlund and an anthology titled Green Card Voices by Tea Rosman — capture individual stories to share the personal challenges, unrealistic expectations and resilience necessary to find success in the United States. I would encourage readers interested in gaining insights to take the time to read these books and be inspired as you travel with these stories that capture the joy of "becoming an American."
