I read Ruth Conniff's article "Time to Stand Up to the Gun Nuts" (8/3/2012) with interest, and, much like a summer storm, impressive thunderous blathering from gun advocates followed her insightful lightning (Letters, 8/17/2012).
Two citizens gave us technical presentations of armaments worthy of a writing credit for some up-channel cable series, and the fact that most people understood their jargon compounds the problem.
What neither of these well-intentioned gun-huggers understands is that while the founders of this country may or may not have envisioned a populace this armed and dangerous, they certainly would not detect much soundness of judgment in the arguments being made in their name.
Distracting the reader with discussions about drum sizes, vehicle-mounted weaponry and the like keeps us from the salient fact that every single perpetrator of these horrific crimes shares the same unhealthy psychological connection to guns. Guns don't kill people; unbalanced people who take advantage of an out-of-control lobby-driven gun culture condoned by the cowards in public office do.
