The University of Wisconsin-Madison recently received more than 6,000 rare Hebrew and Yiddish recordings. They'll become the centerpiece of the new Mayrent Institute for Jewish Culture, the world's only facility devoted to Yiddish arts.
The recordings were collected by Sherry Mayrent, who joined the UW's Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies in 1995. The 78-rpm disks contain performances recorded from 1895 to 1955, including Yiddish theater, klezmer and spoken word.
