Within the traditional University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, to the north of University Avenue, identified Design Neighborhoods from west to east include the hospital area; physical plant support; agricultural college (including Henry Mall); Lakeshore Dormitories, which in the future will see major expansion; a "central hill" area, including Bascom and reaching all the way to Babcock Drive near the Lakeshore dorms; and the cluster of lakeshore buildings around the Memorial Union.
The University Avenue corridor is its own neighborhood, with older Lathrop and Barnard Halls across the street from Grainger Hall, stretching roughly to West Dayton Street. In the future this neighborhood will include the massive new facility, the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery.
The newer "urban campus," to the south of University Avenue, includes the long-anticipated Murray Street esplanade, which will stretch to Regent Street. Other "urban campus" neighborhoods include the Camp Randall area; buildings on and south of West Dayton Street; and downtown dormitories, from Johnson Street down Park Street.
