Word of Mouth: July 30

From your friends at Isthmus, Madison's alt-weekly.

What we're listening to

Katie Zamzow, Isthmus event director:

Lord Huron on Pandora. I first heard their song "The Night We Met" a few years ago, and immediately listened to the entire "Strange Trails" album. "The Night We Met" is about when relationships end –– how even if the relationship was horrible, the end can still be difficult. Music like this can bring back memories and be therapeutic. It can also bring people together –– who hasn't gone through a painful breakup?

How we're moving

Hywania Thompson, copywriter at Madison Metropolitan School District:

I went to Mirror Lake State Park for the first time. This gem is located in Baraboo, just a short drive from Madison. I enjoyed a yoga class and hike led by my friend Amy of Beautifully Made Adventures. A small group of us were invited by Amy and we carpooled to Mirror Lake together. We practiced yoga, hiked the Lakeview trail and ended with time near the beach. In addition to the gorgeous trails, Mirror Lake has picnic areas, playgrounds, volleyball courts, a beach, boat, canoe and kayak rentals, and much more. There’s something for every adventurer.

What we're eating

Chelsey Dequaine, Isthmus social media director:

I play volleyball Monday nights at The Wisco, and the Wisco Chicken Strips (that's the name on the menu) might be the best in Madison. For only $8, you get a hefty amount of chicken strips piled on top of battered fries. Both the strips and fries are cooked to crispy perfection. Serve with BBQ and ranch, and it's the perfect meal.

Mr. Kimchi on King Street

Mr. Kimchi, Madison’s newest Korean spot, recently debuted a new summer menu. Tired of your boring desk lunch? Pop into the restaurant on King Street for the Han Sang lunch box, traditional bibimbap or hot pots. It's the perfect, Insta-worthy lunch.

What we're drinking

Hillary Gunn, marketing coordinator at Majestic Theatre:

Old Sugar Distillery's incredible raspberry mojitos –– with real raspberries of course. After having a few of theirs we tried to make some of our own but they just didn't compare. If they're still serving these bad boys up I highly recommend grabbing one!

What we're eyeing

Devin Renner, marketing director at True Coffee Roasters:

I recently became a father and while having a kid is amazing, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wondered, ‘“When’s this kid going to start doing some chores? He’s nearly nine months already!’” Well now he can (for real). The Baby Mop is perfect for the wee one on the move. You've got to check this out. They even come in a variety of sizes and colors.

What we're watching

Candice Wagener, Isthmus contributor:

My eyes will be glued to the pool at West Side Swim Club this weekend watching my kids, their friends, and more than 2,000 swimmers from teams in and around Madison compete in the All-City Swim Meet. While this is our family's sixth All-City, the event has been a tradition of summer since the 1960s. Go Gators!

What we're searching for

Marshall, the adoptable dog at Dane County Humane Society:

I’m a sweet and silly boy searching for a family of my own. If you like to run and play, then I can’t wait to meet you! At one year old I have energy to spare and love rough and tumble play with my dog friends. Since I’m such a spirited guy, my friends at the shelter tell me I need some work on my manners and may not be the best around young kids, so I’m looking for a family to help me learn some great new tricks! I would love space to run, maybe some toys to toss, but mostly I’m hoping for a family I can love. Learn more about me here
